Shoegaze Sunday – Manhattan Love Suicides

nyc popfest 2008, night 2

This was just awesome.  Tullycraft were so good. I wasn’t expecting it to turn into a mosh, and my toes are feeling pretty sore from all the trampling, but man it was good. Everyone just started dancing.  I’m not sure what people do for Tullycraft in other towns, but I think NYC held its own last night.

I was too busy dancing and getting completely sweaty to take many photos, but I have a couple and I’ll post them soon once I get to my computer.

From Bubblegum To Sky did well too, considering that they were playing with a sit-in drummer and having trouble with their guitar tone.

After Tullycraft finished, Kat and I walked over to Don Hill’s, for the Mondo dance party, where Cats on Fire played. I’m used to the Don Hill parties being super trendy annoying affairs, all either mod or scene.  The Mondo thing was much friendlier.  Maybe it was that it was all the twee kids, but it seemed like that’s their thing, at least according to their website.

More nyc popfest shows tonight!  I’ll be the guy in the crowd having a good time!

Not by me, alas, but here, on Brightest Young Things.

new skatterbrain mix for the summer heat

Just wanted to point out that Skatterbrain has another awesome mix.  I especially liked the songs by Eux Autres and Speedmarket Avenue.

Gritty Kitty

hot day in georgia
Does anyone remember the band, Gritty Kitty? They were one of the first indiepop/twee bands I ever heard. I even bought their second album when it came out five years after their first.

But they seem to have disappeared off the face of the web.  They used to have a proper webpage, but now they just have a barely working label page, and a different webpage from what I remember that doesn’t seem have have been updated since 2002.

Not even a myspace page.

I hope they’re okay.  Collectively and individually.

Twee Tuesday – Gritty Kitty

When You Were Mine

I have this theory that some songs are so good, it doesn’t matter who covers them. You can’t do a bad job with them.

I spent all day listening to Cyndi Lauper’s version of When You Were Mine today.  Oh man.  So good.  I can’t help but bouncing along, all pumping my fist in the air and mouthing the words while I’m sitting at my desk.

So I found some covers today that are just making me throw myself around the room.

This is the best thing I think I’ve ever seen.  Banjo, accordian, synths, distortion.  I want to kiss this band. The Seedy Seeds. Wow.

This is an unofficial video for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s cover. The video is so good, he should just adopt it as the official one.  Great cover too.

(I should make another post of all the crazy videos I found on youtube that were also called When You Were Mine.)

Drove to Connecticut today.  Kat and I listened to Ride and Lush the whole drive.  Pretty nice for such a stressful day.

Here’s a song by Ride.

And here is a complete live set by Lush!!!

Have a good weekend.
