I heard this song a month or so ago on Nothing But Green Lights. And their write-up was so good I don’t want to try to improve upon it.
They wield the glockenspiel, rather than playing it
But I haven’t heard nearly enough people talk about this band so I thought they should get another mention, somewhere. I love this song, Let’s Get Married.
I don’t remember how I heard this band, Fireflies. Maybe I was googling twee. Maybe I read about them on someone else’s blog. It doesn’t matter. This is great stuff. All ethereal vocals and glockenspiel.
Okay, this band is just awesome. My only complaint is I wish I had thought of this. The Blue Ribbon Glee Club does semi-acapella covers of punk songs. They haven’t put out an album yet, but I’ve heard recordings of them covering Fugazi, Dead Kennedys, The Pixies, T-Rex, and Sleater-Kinney.
It’s just awesome. I also love how the girls wear sashes to all their shows.
It doesn’t look like they’ve left their native Chicago yet, but if they start to tour, it’ll be pretty great. Or maybe someone should start a chapter in NYC?
My roommate and I were playing music for each other and he pulled out the cd for this 90s Swedish band Eggstone. They seemed pretty solid and we kept listening and then I heard the song I’m posting here. Just a pretty fun song about water.
I’m also including this lounge-y one from the album too, ’cause I liked it.
It’s got a great guitar hook that I’m still trying to figure out. Apparently it’s the catchiest song on their album, according to Three Imaginary Girls.
One of my favorite albums is The Love Letter Band’sEven The Pretty Girls Take Medicine. It came out in 2002 and I don’t think they got enough press. It’s sorta electronic-y and lofi and acoustic all at once. It’s just a beautiful album.
It might not be available anymore. I just checked darla.com and they didn’t have it.
He’s come out with albums afterwards, but the line up seems to be constantly changing and the band’s sound has moved to a more screaming folky sound.
He also seems to go as Bad Weather California.
The Love Letter Band is currently signed to Happy Happy Birthday To Me and their new album can be bought there and at darla.com. The song This World Is Not My Home is from that.
I’ve been hearing this song a lot on KEXP and found this video with the song.
Very nice, especially if you’re into alt-country. I really like the background vocals. They remind me of that lonely sound from the Modest Mouse cover of Sleepwalking, which also has female backup vocals on the chorus. Anyways.
Pufferfish has more songs available at their myspace page. I recommend listening to Rest Stop, where they sound like Van Morrison.
I got into The Octopus Project about a year ago when I bought their The House of Apples & Eyeballs collaboration with Black Moth Super Rainbow. I thought they were sorta okay, but wasn’t into the far out stuff.
But this new album which came out last fall, Hello, Avalanche, is much more accessible. I love it.
I first heard their song Truck, which I think sounds like running. I daydreamed about making a video for it, all fast motion POV of a team race in the park.
This video I found on youtube comes pretty close to what I was thinking with its frantic motion and sped up footage:
I’m including the last track of the album, Queen, here because I can listen to it so many times in a row and it still moves me. It’s much slower than Truck. It’s almost introspective.
I found Monster Movie a couple years ago, but I started listening to them again this morning on my commute. They have a bunch of songs that I like to put on repeat and just bliss out listening to. Apparently one of its members used to be in Slowdive.
